Food and drink giant Nestlé buys palm oil from companies linked to the destruction of Paradise Rainforests in Indonesia.

The company’s suppliers include Sinar Mas, a company which is destroying Indonesia’s rainforest — critical habitat for an unbelievable assortment of wildlife, including orangutans — to make way for palm oil plantations.

Take action now and tell Nestlé to stop buying palm oil from suppliers that destroy rainforests and peatlands.

It’s time for Nestlé to support a moratorium on the destruction of Indonesian forests for palm oil!

* In a recent response to our campaign, Nestlé seems to agree with Greenpeace that much more has to be done to stop the destruction of Paradise Forests and peatlands for palm oil, but the company hasn’t delivered the kind of action we hoped to see. Nestlé will still be using palm oil from destructive suppliers like Sinar Mas through indirect supplies. The Greenpeace campaign will continue until Nestlé has cut the Sinar Mas group from its supply chain completely and has become a public advocate for peatland protection and a deforestation moratorium.

Jeg elsker dig! It’s the phrase “I love you” in Danish! Well, it’s been a long time since I discovered that I was in love with my golden girl. Well, I think I am missing the point! Let’s come back to our issue. Yes I’m in love! Not just with my golden girl but with my planet as well! When you see the beauties that Mother Nature gave us to stare at and protect them….! December is up and in Copenhagen is getting really hot! The leaders of approximately 190 countries will attend the conference. This conference has a very important effect and impact on whether we are going to save the planet or not. Scientists predict that we only have 10 years in order to take drastic measures and tackle the climate crisis. That’s a lot of work for our lazy politicians! They do need some help, don’t you think? Well that’s why Greenpeace is protesting so frequently lately! We really need a strong action, decision this December in Copenhagen. It’s not about saving the planet or not. It’s about saving mankind. Earth can survive without us, too. We have to rethink and realise that a scenario like this exists. We have nowhere to go. Here is our only home. Let’s protect it before it’s too late! Well Copenhagen is on at the 7th of December until the 18th. That’s our final choice in our dillema: save ourselves or not?

The only thing that we need is love. Love can solve everything. So, let’s teach our politicians to say: Jeg elsker dig!

Well I have to say Jeg elsker dig for another reason as well! Anyway, love the planet!

from Alternet.com

What if celebrity news carried its own version of a nutrition label? But instead of calories, or health risks, how about a label that gets at celebrities’ impact on the planet?

Imagine if each time a tabloid or movie or TV show fed our celebrity addiction by running the image of Angelina, Bono or Gisele Bundschen, they also were required to put the celeb’s eco-footprint in the corner of that image? If the tabs really wanted to knock themselves out, they could also run a kind of eco-ingredient list — the number of hours the celeb spends in the air, the square feet of housing she owns, number of children he has, and so on.

It’s an idea with real timeliness, if I do say so myself. A few weeks ago, uber-feminist Naomi Wolf praised Angelina Jolie’s independence, symbolized by her ability to fly her own plane, without even mentioning that if every woman did that, we’d need a million planets worth of resources to support the human population.

Flying High

Wolf is far from alone. This week, the top story in several tabs was that Jolie has resumed “one of her favourite hobbies…flying lessons!” without making any comment about the relative impact on the planet of flying to, say, knitting or karate.

People Magazine ran a piece about how pregnant supermodel Gisele Bundschen is “constantly traveling” (what a good earth mother). John Travolta owns his own specially outfitted 707 jet.

And the Daily Mail ran a piece about how Victoria and David Beckham were in the Seychelles one day, then Heathrow, then LA the next. How smoggy their designer footprint must be!

But these stories, and most others, tell us nothing of the impact of celebs’ enviable lifestyles.

Glam Carbon Gluttons

Last week, Carbon Footprint calculated the impact of U2′s world tour. Ironically, U2 is outspoken about their commitment to the environment, but carbon output of their tour this year is far bigger even than Madonna’s high-maintenance carbon-heavy tour. U2′s carbon emissions will equal that of 90,000 people flying from Dublin to London, and are equivalent of the waste created by 6,500 average British or Irish people in an entire year (equal to leaving a standard 100 watt light bulb on for 159,000 years). “To offset this year’s carbon emissions, U2 would need to plant 20,118 trees.”

This story hit media outlets around the world within hours, demonstrating that not just me but a lot of people actually are interested in such information. (I’m guessing we belong to the same tribe of label readers at the grocery store.)

But it’s not enough to calculate footprints for the odd tour or movie. What the public is most often consuming is celebrity lifestyle information. And we need good information about what that actually costs.

How to Read an Eco-Footprint

People follow celebrities because “reality is scary and the surreal is not,” says Dr. William Rees, the UBC professor who invented the concept of the ecological footprint. “We have made wealth and glitter and this false world of celebrity into the ideal, and people glom onto it.” But, he adds, “in a sense, doing an eco-footprint of these folks might help ground us back into reality.”

He said it’s easy to calculate an eco-footprint: it’s simply a person’s consumption on an annual basis. And 85 per cent of it is made up of fuel, food, housing, and space heating.

Rees says that for the average individual, by far the biggest component is private transportation using fossil fuels: cars and plans. “Let’s face it, most celebrities have half a dozen of those and travel by private aircraft.”

The next item is food, because for most people, food travels long distances and therefore takes fuel, and it also consumes pesticides and so on. “Celebrities tend to have very high-end diets.”

The next major category is water and space heating, and “the bigger your house and car, the larger your consumption of those.” Of course, many celebrities not only have one large house, but many of them.

Rees said that there are only two hectares on the planet to support each person, but the average North American uses nine hectares, which means most North Americans need three to four times as much productive ecosystem as is available on the planet to support their needs. “The really inconvenient truth is that the current global development path is an impossibility serum.”

What Planets Do They Live On?

I plugged in the consumption numbers for an imaginary celebrity into this footprint calculator andthis one, too. I assumed that the person had a private jet, flew more than 400 hours a year, had at least two large houses, and owned more than one car. Those consumption amounts exceeded the maximum inputs on the survey — there was no category for more than one house, or for private jet, for example. But even given that, the survey found it would take over 60 earths to support that lifestyle for everyone.

But then, celebrities aren’t everyone, are they? They live on 60 or even hundreds of planets, while the rest of us inhabit one that’s arguably in deep trouble. I’m not holding my breath that my modest proposal would ever be taken up by a media industry so invested in feeding our celebrity worship. But I’ll keep dreaming of truth in labelling.

The carbon emissions of Bono’s band’s world tour are equivalent to the waste created by 6,500 average British or Irish people in an entire year. Oh my goodness!

Planet Earth, my home, my place
A capricious anomaly in the sea of space
Planet Earth are you just
Floating by, a cloud of dust
A minor globe, about to bust
A piece of metal bound to rust
A speck of matter in a mindless void
A lonely spacship, a large asteroid
Cold as a rock without a hue
Held together with a bit of glue
Something tells me this isn’t true
You are my swweetheart soft and blue
Do you care, have you a part
In the deepest emotions of my own heart
Tender with breezes caressing and whole
Alive with music, haunting my soul.
In my veins I’ve felt the mystery
Of corridors of time, books of hisotry
Life songs of ages throbbing in my blood
Have danced the rhythm of the tide and flood
Your misty clouds, your electric storm
Were turbulent tempests in my own form
I’ve licked the salt, the bitter, the sweet
Of every encounter, of passion, of heat
Your riotous color, your fragrance, your taste
Have thrilled my senses beyond all haste
In your beuaty, I’ve known the how
Of timeless bliss, this moment of now
Planet Earth are you just
Floating by, a cloud of dust
A minor globe, about to bust
A piece of metal bound to rust
A speck of matter in a mindless void
A lonely spacship, a large asteroid
Cold as a rock without a hue
Held together with a bit of glue
Something tells me this isn’t true
You are my swweetheart gentle and blue
Do you care, have you a part
In the deepest emotions of my own heart
Tender with breezes caressing and whole
Alive with music, haunting my soul.
Planet Earth, gentle and blue
With all my heart, I love you.
Countries all over the world have already banned the plastic ban or moving towards this direction. Rwanda, Israel, Bangladesh, Singapore, Canada, India and Kenya have already shown their support on saving the planet. It is a very important measure that should be taken as soon as possible. Santorini is being visited by 1.5 million tourists per year, so you can imagine how many plastic bags go to the landfill and pollute our seas. Save Santorini, save the world. Sign this petition and make the municipality of THIRA stop using plastic bags….

“BHUBHANESHWAR, India — Greenpeace welcomed the news of return of mass-nesting of Olive Ridley Turtles at Nasi Islands off the Gahirmatha coast. Reports available from the Department of Forests – Wildlife, Government of Orissa suggest that over 100,000 turtles nested en masse at Nasi 2 – Islands (1). The last two seasons have however also witnessed unusually severe erosion of the Gahirmatha Beaches. The length of the Nasi nesting beach has now shrunk to less than a kilometre, thereby significantly reducing the nesting habitat available for mass-nesting of the turtles in the region.

“We are absolutely delighted to see the turtles return to Gahirmatha in tune with their annual sojourn after giving the region a miss in 2007-2008 turtle season.” said Ashish Fernandes, Oceans Campaigner, Greenpeace India. “However, this episode of mass-nesting cannot be used as a smoke screen by port promoters in projecting that all is fine. It would be dangerous to assume so since this nesting does not mean that the turtles and the adjoining ecologically sensitive areas, including the Bitharkanika National Park are safe .Our concerns, shared by scientists, academics and other conservationists over ongoing dredging operations for construction of the Dhamra Port, and its impacts on the turtles and adjoining areas, remain (2). In the absence of any credible and comprehensive assessment of dredging and port construction activities on these areas, the significant
ecological threat persists” he added.

Earlier, on March 23rd, 2009, coinciding with the Indian launch of the TATA “Nano”, Greenpeace, in an open letter to Ratan Tata, in the Financial Times and the International Herald Tribune, reminded the TATAs of their environmental responsibilities, in line with the company’s professed environmental ethics, by raising the issue of “Placing the planet on par with profits, because there are some things that money just can’t buy back”. While the launch of the TATA Nano has generated significant excitement, this has coincided with disappointment among the public over TATAs’ reluctance to suspend dredging and commence an independent and comprehensive biological threat assessment. In the last few weeks alone over 10,000 people have faxed Mr. Tata, calling for a suspension of dredging at the port (3).

Heightened protests in 2008 forced the TATAs into a dialogue process with an alliance of environmental and conservation organisations. This hit a dead end in February 2009 after TATA refused to consider any suspension of construction or dredging work at the port (4). The negotiations involved the need to suspend construction, specifically dredging, pending an independent and comprehensive biological threat assessment of the Dhamra Port on the turtles and adjoining areas.

Commenting on the current impasse, Bittu Sahgal, Editor, Sanctuary Asia said “For Tata Steel to refuse to halt dredging operations, claiming they have scientific advice to the effect that this will not impact the turtles, amounts to embracing voluntary blindness. It not only defies common sense, but throws the tenets of the precautionary principle to the winds. JRD would strongly disapprove of the obstinate attitude of the Tata Steel management towards the fate of one of India’s most endangered species. Dredging must stop immediately and independent scientists must be asked to determine the extent to which the port will harm the turtles and other biodiversity.”

Over 100,000 people from across the world have already joined Greenpeace in reminding Mr. Ratan Tata of the need to put ecological and environmental imperatives on par with corporate profitability. In 2008, over 100,000 Greenpeace cyber-activists called on the TATAs to relocate the port. A Greenpeace snap-poll of nearly 5000 TATA customers, conducted in February this year, revealed that 98% believed that port construction should be stopped immediately (5).

The development of this port has been mired in controversy (6). Its location for years has been a matter of serious concern to conservationists, hundreds of scientists and academics, including turtle experts, who have opposed it (7).

Speaking on the TATA’s reluctance to suspend dredging and commence a study, Fernandes added “Scientists, conservationists and the general public are raising an outcry against this port. There is clear evidence of the ecological significance of the port site as well (8). What more does Mr. Ratan Tata need? If the TATAs want to maintain their professed reputation for being sensitive to social and environmental concerns – they have no choice but to suspend dredging and commence an independent and comprehensive assessment”.”
